A day in your life as a Home Equity Underwriter:

Under the direction of the Manager, the Consumer Credit Officer is responsible for rendering credit decision on all consumer loan products utilizing established guidelines and analyzing support documents, communicating the decision to the branch or customer and complying with established lending regulations, policies and procedures.  If applicable or appropriate, assists in business unit’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act. In addition, this position is responsible for demonstrating the Excellence in Sales/Service (ESS) philosophy by participating in and practicing ESS disciplines and behaviors.

 

We’ll give you these important responsibilities…

  • Makes credit decisions on consumer direct loan products with strong focus on Home Equity Lines of Credit in adherence to Bank Credit Policies and department procedures. 
  • Investigates and validates application information, utilizes supporting documents to render decisions. 
  • Credit decision may include analysis of but is not limited to the following: customer, bank or third party sources for income documentation such as personal and related business tax returns, personal and related business financial statements, other financial data, credit exposure, credit reports, real property appraisals, title and other property information. 
  • Communicates lending decisions to customer and branch staff.
  • Maintains productivity and quality of service standards, as established by management, with respect to service level agreements for credit decisions and closing of credit transactions.
  • Including but not limited to making decisions on loans within specified timeframes, from receipt of the application to final decision and through closing as applicable.
  • Recommends as appropriate alternatives for operational and process efficiencies as it relates to the underwriting process as well as the end to end direct consumer lending process. 
  • Communicates effectively, courteously and proactively with customers, which includes both internal retail/wholesale staff and external customers Bank partners, external customers). 
  • Credit officer is also expected to be able to articulate current policies, procedures and/or processes as it relates to specific consumer lending products.
  • Exercises individual lending authority for Direct Consumer Lending and specialized lending programs as appropriate.
  • Assures that lending decisions are within authorized lending limits and within the Bank’s lending policies. 
  • Makes recommendations for loan applications outside of lending authority to a higher level of lending authority for review and approval.
  • Ensures adherence to federal regulatory requirements governing consumer credit.
  • Adheres to established department policies and procedures relative to the underwriting, approval and closing of consumer loans.
  • Actively stays abreast of changes in credit policies and lending guidelines and procedures, while being compliant with consumer regulations.

 

 


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field, or an associate degree in mortgage banking or financial services or equivalent experience.
  • Additional education and certification may be required for mortgage underwriters working with loans regulated by government agencies, such as the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).

 

Experience:

  • Two to three years of experience in consumer lending or related experience.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to use a personal computer and is proficient on Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, and Access. 
  • Must be knowledgeable and proficient in the use of automated underwriting systems, word processing, and spreadsheet programs. 
  • Ability to use a 10-key adding machine, calculator, typewriter, fax, scanner and copy machines. 
  • Any other standard Bank requirement.

 

Other Job Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of consumer finance and accounting. 
  • Must be detailed oriented with excellent research and decision making ability, and be able to work accurately under deadline pressure and volume pressure. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and prioritize workload to meet deadlines. 
  • Detail oriented to ensure credit decisions are executed in compliance with policies and procedures and overall accuracy. 
  • Must have excellent customer service and communication skills. 
  • The Consumer Credit Officer I performs assigned job duties under the close supervision of the Manager. 
  • Officer II works under the general supervision of the Manager and Officer III performs job duties with minimal supervision.
