A day in your life as a Compliance and Operational Risk Manager

Under the direction of the Private Banking Manager, this position is responsible for the management and enhancement of the compliance and operational risk management programs for the Private Banking Group.  In addition, this position is responsible for monitoring and enforcing all legal, regulatory and internal compliance policies and procedures, as well as establishing new compliance and operational risk management procedures resulting from policy and procedure changes for the Group.  Further, this position manages the compliance team and support staff. Ensures business unit’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), USA PATRIOT Act. In addition, this position is responsible for serving as the Excellence in Sales/Service (ESS) champion for the unit.  This includes planning, executing, monitoring and measuring the service process. 

 

We’ll give you these important responsibilities…

  • Directs the overall regulatory compliance programs for the Private Banking Group.  Proactively maintains and modifies (as needed) the formal compliance programs for annual review and approval. Leads all efforts for compliance audits and regulatory examinations, including advance preparations, coordination of all information between departments and examiners during the audit/exam, follow up on findings and development of written responses. Coordinates and compiles audit responses for internal, external and regulatory audit findings for the Private Banking Group.  Manages, communicates and resolves all open compliance and operational risk issues, projects and related outstanding items.
  • Analyzes, summarizes and communicates current compliance and operational risk developments to division and department managers, and coordinates efforts to ensure policies, procedures, forms and training meet all new and amended requirements and deadlines relating to applicable laws and regulations for the Private Banking Group.  Validates significant operational processes to mitigate risk and ensure operational testing.  Analyzes and communicates compliance requirements for new or revised products, services, systems to division and department management.  Consults with internal partners in corporate compliance, legal, risk and other applicable areas.  Coordinates and develops procedures that cross over interdepartmental functionality to ensure efficient work flow.  Provides service and compliance leadership for the Private Banking Group.
  • Develops and executes an assessment of process for ongoing monitoring and periodic status reporting on the effectiveness of the division compliance program.  Provides management with timely and accurate reports on monitoring and other compliance control measurements.  Plans and initiates all training regarding compliance with laws and regulations requirements.   Plans, develops, implements and maintains compliance training programs for staff members, and company-wide compliance monitoring processes covering all high risk compliance activities, which includes loan origination, loan servicing and regulatory reporting.
  • Responsible for the management of all employees in the team including staffing, scheduling, compensation, performance management, training and development.   Goal is to attract, retain and motivate the team to achieve management business objectives and maintain a favorable employee relations climate. Responsible for the timely and effective management of Human Resources forms and documents relevant to immediate staff.  Develops training curriculum for desktop procedures and system procedures for division staff training and audit.  Trains, educates and develops staff on system applications and procedures to become competent and professional in their respective capacities.
  • Leads and executes multiple process improvement projects for the Private Banking Group.      Keeps abreast of all products and services.  Maintains a strong working knowledge of, and relationships with other departments to achieve optimal client service.  Exercises prudent and judicious use of signing authority within authorized limits to approve daily work.  Maintains the role of Division Business Continuity Coordinator (DBCC) for the Private Banking Group and responsible for overseeing the division Team and Subordinate BRP Plans.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities as assigned.

 

 


Qualifications

Education: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with major in business, accounting, finance or related area, or equivalent work experience.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum 7 years of banking or consumer lending experience with responsibilities including compliance with federal and state laws, regulations and rules and operational risk mitigation. 
  • Or a combination of 7 or more years of compliance/audit/regulatory experience in the banking and consumer lending industries. 
  • Requires prior lead/supervisory/management experience, as well as significant project management/process improvement experience.
  • Must possess a good understanding of all banking products and services.
  • Varied banking experience including private banking and lending compliance strongly preferred.
  • Level of knowledge required so that is considered a compliance expert in one or more skill sets, business areas or products.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency and expertise with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) or similar software. 
  • Knowledge of or ability to use Bank software and systems.

  • Able to explain complex ideas in simple terms to all levels of employee and management.
  • Must exercise effective management skills and display professionalism at all times.
  • Able to work flexible hours including holidays, weekends and evenings as needed or assigned.
