A day in your life as a Senior Underwriter:

Under the direction of the Operations Manager, responsible for making investment quality lending decisions in compliance with Bank of Hawaii, and other Institutional investors, guidelines and requirements.  Ensures the business unit’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.  In addition, this position is responsible for demonstrating the Excellence in Sales/Service (ESS) philosophy by participating in and practicing ESS discipline and behaviors.

 

We’ll give you these important responsibilities…

  • Works with credit/underwriting team in Residential Loan Operations to analyze and make credit decisions on single family residential mortgage loan programs.  Provides technical support to staff to ensure timely decisions and that proper underwriting procedures are applied. 
  • Analyzes and modifies loan information using investor automated underwriting systems for all loan programs offered by Bank of Hawaii.
  • Communicates with retail/wholesale staff and branches to make underwriting and processing recommendations and/or answer questions regarding loan policies and procedures.  Communicates effectively, courteously and proactively with internal customers, which includes, however, is not limited to, other Processors, Support Processors, Loan Officers, Underwriters and other division employees, including Management, and external customers, maintaining quality of service standards as determined by Management.  This includes maintaining a positive attitude.  Provides technical assistance and review of work for peer staff members.
  • Gathers and analyzes information received from appraisal reports, credit reports, financial statements and other required loan documents.  Generates approval letters to borrowers and assists in packaging of loans for sale.
  • Serves as the contact person and coordinator for government loans accepted under Federal Housing Administration (FHA) and Veteran’s Administration (VA) guidelines for the bank.  Assures that submissions in this portfolio are in compliance with government regulations and delivery requirements.  Maintains records and policy regarding this product line and prepares Housing and Urban Development (HUD) documents as required to maintain accreditation of Bank of Hawaii.  Maintains personal designation for FHA and VA underwriting and assists others in maintaining designations.  Assists in overseeing staff compliance to policies and procedures.
  • Keeps up to date on changes in programs and assists in the training and development required to deliver loans according to program parameters.  Provides training and guidance to Underwriters I and II.  Works with management to develop plan for achieving established career objectives for staff.
  • Inputs, accesses and retrieves information on the mortgage loan processing system.  Assists in coordinating the workflow from credit into the processing department and through closing to ensure effective and efficient resale of loans.

 

 


Qualifications

EDUCATION: 

  • High school diploma, G.E.D or equivalent work experience.

 

EXPERIENCE: 

  • Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience; other related experience in mortgage lending related employment will be considered.

 

TECHNICAL SKILLS: 

  • Must be knowledgeable and proficient in the use of investor automated underwriting systems (Fannie Mae Desktop Underwriting and Freddie Mac Loan Prospector). 
  • Ability to use a personal computer and is proficient on Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, and Access. 
  • Ability to use a calculator and typewriter.

 

OTHER JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Must be able to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities. 
  • Ability to perform job functions with no supervision. 
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as needed or assigned.
